The ‘‘CR’‘ (Color Raw) models use a CCD with a color mask, commonly referred to as ‘‘Bayer filter,’‘ and output the ‘‘raw color’‘ pixel values in 8 or 10 bit to be converted to a color image on the computer using common Bayer conversion routines. According to La Marca, ‘‘There are instances when it’s desirable for color processing to take place outside of the camera, enabling special processing to the images prior to color conversion.’‘ The CR models transmit only the raw pixel values so they can achieve twice the frame rate of the DFW series.
With the ‘‘DFW’‘ models color processing is performed inside the cameras by a dedicated Digital Signal Processor (DSP) for precise color conversion and white balancing on the fly. The DSP starts with a raw 10-bit pixel value and outputs high quality 8-bit YUV422 color images.
